stanford university graduate housing
Invited to enter a limited architectural competition by Stanford University, MacDonald Architects submitted this project which proved unique in its layout by being flexible in function and capable of adapting as research labs, classrooms, or student housing.
The buildings were designed as armatures for potential change, but the design presently accommodates graduate student housing with a 200 resident capacity, a student restaurant, and a recreation center with parking for the residents.
Designed to integrate with the adjacent buildings' context, the new complex utilized the University’s existing aesthetic, with its terracotta roof tiles, plaster walls, and arches, while also blending the buildings' masses into the campus' historical grid system. The new landscaping was also derived from the existing landscape patterns.
