MacDonald Architects was hired by Caltrans to develop bike/pedestrian pathways for the Alfred Zampa Memorial Bridge (Carquinez Bridge) in Carquinez, California. The images above show a typical part of the pathway that is located on one of the bridge decks of this suspension bridge.
MacDonald Architects completed five prototype rail systems, models, and illustrations utilized in the public hearings with the City of Crockett Design Advisory Panel, the Bay Conservation and Development Commission (BCDC), and Caltrans.
The handrails were created from the new bridge's architectural vocabulary. For example, the illustrations above shows a vertical supporting structural member that is a take-off from a hanging suspender cable. This handrail required an open design approach in order to prevent bridge deck oscillation.
