winston-salem connector gateway arch
winston-salem, north carolina
This design was created in collaboration with the Winston-Salem Creative Corridors Coalition as a gateway for the Winston-Salem Connector at Highway 52 and the new Research Parkway. This gateway design will be unique to Winston-Salem because of the specific Moravian Arch style and was created in order to help brand the city as a prominent destination. This gateway arch is part of a revitalized transportation corridor rich in landscaped gardens and public art. The design enhances and adds to Winston-Salem's City of Arts and Innovation theme and creates an inspiring new gateway for vehicle and pedestrians.
MacDonald Architects developed this iconic gateway from the surrounding regional context referring to a network of elements in the art and gardens within the creative corridor. The lighting of the arch structure is designed to glow at night using hidden LED lamps, creating a light source that is not obvious to pedestrians and motorists.
