MacDonald Architects provided aesthetic design assistance to our clients, Dokken Engineering and the City of Modesto, for a modified haunch girder bridge in Modesto, California.

This bridge type was approved by the community through design workshops in the city of Modesto.

Approximately 2000 feet long, the bridge carries two lanes of traffic in each direction as well as pedestrian and bicycle paths over the Tuolumne River.

Aesthetic details are found in the lighting, railings, the forecourt, and pier treatments on the bridge. The modern architectural vocabulary joins the adjacent historic Lion Bridge and reinforces its proportions and human scale. Additionally, the new bridge represents a 21st century view for the park that surrounds the structure.
