In collaboration with the design-build team that includes Walsh Construction, Jacobs, and Stantec, MacDonald Architects is currently providing architectural design services for the Downtown Crossing over the Ohio River. The design includes a new cable-stayed bridge, a repaired and reconfigured steel-truss bridge, and reconstructed interchange bridges in downtown Louisville, Kentucky and Jeffersonville, Indiana.
The new Downtown Bridge serves as a major vehicular thoroughfare which boasts heavy traffic. As one views the new Downtown Bridge from a distance, the shape of the cable-stayed structure swoops through the sky with an elegant grace. The shape of these triangular forms symbolizes the importance of the nautical aspects of the river’s activities and becomes a centerpiece to the identity and context of this city.
