MacDonald Architects was on a successful design/build team that won the lowest bid providing architectural aesthetics for Delaware’s signature bridge competition. In collaboration with Buckland & Taylor and PCL, MacDonald Architects presented the winning design for a cable-stayed replacement bridge.
The Indian River Inlet Bridge reflects the theme of a bridge in “Harmony with Nature.” The form of the towers reflects the geometric shape of the inlet and brings images of the seashore onto the deck. The colors of the bridge and the rise of the deck are emblematic of the shoreline dunes. The bridge elements naturally evolve into overlooks, creating space where pedestrians can fully experience the majesty of the Atlantic Ocean. The design of the bridge creates a gateway for pedestrians, bicyclists, vehicles, and boaters.
Unfortunately, although, MacDonald Architects and team won the first competition, the design was never executed.
